As it combines two of my favorite things- coffee and historical fiction- I was quick to pick up Anthony Capella’s new novel, The Various Flavors of Coffee. Set in the 1800s in both England and Africa, the novel follows the story of Robert Wallis, an aspiring poet and shiftless hedonist. Along with his personal story, the novel explores larger historical themes such as the women’s suffrage movement, colonial coffee plantations, and world economic systems. Oh yeah, and there’s a nice love story, too.
For a coffee lover, it was a pleasure to read the descriptions of the different coffees, the proceedure of tasting coffee (known as ‘cupping’), and the descriptors- often poetic- used to describe the flavors. Brew up a pot and enjoy.
